Altenmünster kom i det 9. århundrede til klosteret Ellwangen, 1262 derefter til klosteret Oberschönenfeld i det højestift Augsburg. Zusamzell tilhørte domkapitlet i Augsburg. Siden rigshovedafgørelsen i 1803 har byen tilhørt Bayern.
Som en del af forvaltningsreformerne i Bayern blev kommunen Altenmünster oprettet med kommunalbekendtgørelsen fra 1818. Fra 1862 til 1929 tilhørte Altenmünster distriktskontoret i Zusmarshausen, og fra 1929 til distriktskontoret i Wertingen, som fra 1939 blev omtalt som Landkreis Wertingen.
