Dorndorf ligger på nordkanten af Rhön. I udkanten af byen løber Felda ud i Werra. Den modstående engflade bliver ofte oversvømmet af højvande, bagved rejser den stejl opadgående Musserberg sig i sydenden af Frauenseer-skoven.
Dorndorf hed engang "Villa Thoranthorpf ved Unisoara". Denne Thoranthorpf blev den 31. august 786 givet til klosteret Hersfeld af Karl den Store. Det tilhørte Amt Krayenberg, som fra 1741 tilhørte hertugdømmet Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach.
