Prenzlau er hovedbyen og administrativt center for den nordbrandenburger kommune Uckermark, et af middelcentrene i Brandenburg. Prenzlau er den historiske hovedby i landskabet Uckermark og var i middelalderen, sammen med Berlin-Cölln, Frankfurt og Stendal, en af de fire største byer i Mark Brandenburg.
Stednavnet har slavisk oprindelse og betyder „bopæl for en mand ved navn Premyslaw“. Mellem det 15. og slutningen af det 19. århundrede findes der beviser for både skrivemåden Prentzlau/Prenzlau samt Prentzlow/Prenzlow.
