Salzgitter er en storby i det nordlige Harz-fodland, i sydøstlige Niedersachsen. Den frie by er sæde for Salzgitter AG og danner med byerne Braunschweig og Wolfsburg et af landets ni hovedcentre. Den er en del af metropolregionen Hannover-Braunschweig-Göttingen-Wolfsburg. Salzgitter har eksisteret i sin nuværende form siden 1942 og var en af de få nye bygrundlæggelser i Tyskland i første halvdel af det 20. århundrede.
Byen er forbundet med Mittellandkanal via en stikkanal. De nærmeste storbyer er den nordøstligt grænsende by Braunschweig, den 30 km vestligt beliggende by Hildesheim og den 50 km væk beliggende by Hannover mod nordvest.
