Gevelsberg Hovedbanegård ligger på jernbanelinjen Düsseldorf-Derendorf–Dortmund Syd. Den må ikke forveksles med den tidligere holdeplads Gevelsberg og den nuværende holdeplads Ennepetal på jernbanelinjen Elberfeld–Dortmund. Også Gevelsberg Hovedbanegård er driftsmæssigt set en holdeplads, da den ikke længere har nogen værelser. Alle andre hovedbanegårde i Tyskland er stationer. Desuden er Gevelsberg, Lörrach og Remscheid de eneste "Hovedbanegård" kaldte adgangssteder i Tyskland, der kun betjenes af S-tog.
