Arbejdsudannelseslejren Hunswinkel lå cirka en kilometer syd for Lüdenscheid, på det nuværende grund af Versetalsperren. Denne lejr blev oprettet i 1932 af Fa. Hochtief i forbindelse med konstruktionen af Versetalsperren for arbejdskraft fra den frivillige arbejdsservice. I 1938 blev denne lejr overtaget af Reichsarbeitsdienst. I august 1940 blev den til AEL Hunswinkel. På det tidspunkt bestod den af to barakker til hver 100 personer og uden for indhegningen en kantinebarak. Barakkerne havde ingen opvarmning. I denne lejr, der blev drevet til en vedholdende afskrækkende disciplinering, blev både tyskere og udlændinge sendt. Under den sædvanlige seks ugers tjeneste med en daglig arbejdstid på tolv timer var mishandlinger en dagligdag. I 1945 var AEL Hunswinkel samtidig en KZ.
