Sognekirken St. Jakobi i den gamle by står på fundamenterne af en mindre forgænger-kirke. Den kunne allerede ses på det første bysegl fra 1248. Enkeltfundamenter derfra er bevaret til i dag.
Efter den store bybrand i 1478 blev kirken genopbygget. Den første oplysning om denne kirke stammer fra 1495, da indvielsen fandt sted. På det tidspunkt var formodentlig den ældste bygningsdel, sakristiet, og det hvælvede kor færdigt. Koret har to fag med krydsvægge og slutter med en polygonal apsis med 5/8 afslutning.
