Den jødiske menighed i Leipzig blev først grundlagt i 1847, selvom spor af jødisk liv i Leipzig kan spores tilbage til middelalderen. Først fra midten af det 19. århundrede blev det dog tilladt for jøder at bosætte sig permanent i Leipzig.
Fra dette tidspunkt udviklede der sig et mangfoldigt jødisk liv i Leipzig. De nyankomne emanciperede sig i stigende grad som Leipzig-borgere. Synagoger blev bygget, skoler blev grundlagt. På blot hundrede år blev den Leipzig Kehillah den sjette største i hele Tyskland og den største i Sachsen, i 1925 havde den omkring 13.000 medlemmer.
