Bygningen blev opført i 1562 som rådhus for byen Gifhorn. For at imponere rejsende og handlende på de gennem Gifhorn førende hovedveje blev det udsmykket med pragtfulde træsnit.
På første sal befandt der sig kontorer og en festsal, i stueetagen lå rådkælderen, også kaldet rådkrog. Den blev på det tidspunkt udlejet til den højstbydende vært i et antal år. I 1843 blev huset solgt. Lokalet har siden været drevet af skiftende ejere.
