Forstel ligger i den nordlige Odenwald. I nærheden af byen løber grænsen fra grundfjeldet til dækmaterialet, hvilket gør, at der findes mange mineraler her. I tidligere tider blev blandt andet hematit og kalksten udvundet. Landevejen 3106 løber langs den nordlige bygrænse.
Den ældste bekræftede omtale af stedet stammer fra 1200. Den daværende bynavn var Forstall. Forstel tilhørte herren af Breuberg og faldt sammen med den i 1806 til storhertugdømmet Hessen.
