Brual nævnes første gang i det 10. århundrede. Ifølge overleveringen var der tre borge i Brual.
Naboerskabet til østfriserne har ikke altid været godt for Brualerne. Afspærringen af Ems, som er den vigtigste vandvej i området, var let at gennemføre i Brual. Ejerskabet af forsvarsanlæggene, Dieler Schanze, var ret værdifuldt for de interesserede folk og fyrster.
