Den gamle navn på byen var Firminiaco eller Firminiacus. Navnet blev først registreret i et charter fra 971 af kongen af Burgund.
Firminy havde historisk vigtige kulminer, der har været kendt siden det 14. århundrede, samt omfattende produktion af jern-, stål- og aluminiumsgoder, herunder jernbanemateriale, maskiner og kanoner. Der blev også fremstillet fine uldne strømper.
