Vincent van Gogh og hans bror Theo er begravet på kirkegården i Auvers-sur-Oise. Den 27. juli 1890, i en alder af 37, sårede Van Gogh sig selv i brystet med en pistol. Han ville skyde sig selv i hjertet, men lavede en klassisk fejl ved at tro, at hjertet er i niveau med den venstre brystvorte. Han missede på grund af dette og døde af indre blødning den 29. juli med Theo ved sin side. Seks måneder senere døde Theo også. Han efterlod sig en søn, Vincent Willem, bedstefaderen til den berømte filminstruktør og kommentator Theo van Gogh, der ville blive myrdet i Amsterdam i 2004 og som også ville dø af en kugle, ligesom sin berømte slægtning.
