Stonne er en lille landsby, der kun består af en håndfuld gårde, og som blev stærkt omstridt under invasionen af Frankrig i Anden Verdenskrig. Landsbyen skiftede hænder 17 gange over tre dages kamp mellem 15. maj og 17. maj 1940. Operationer nær byen involverede 90.000 tyske tropper og 300 tyske tankvogne, modstået af 42.500 franske soldater og 130 franske tankvogne. Tyskerne mistede 26.500 mænd og 24 tankvogne, mens franskmændene mistede 7.500 mænd og 33 tankvogne.
