Det var her i 1798, at Napoleon drog afsted med sin hær for at invadere Ægypten. Ikke mindre end 200 videnskabsfolk sluttede sig til tropperne for at gribe chancen, på en meget opportunistisk måde, for at indsamle "informationer" i Ægypten. En person, der også ønskede at deltage, var den berømte videnskabsmand og opdagelsesrejsende Alexander von Humboldt. Han forsøgte at slutte sig til dem via Marseille, men uden held.
