Odéon ligger i det 6. arrondissement på venstre bred af Seinen, tæt på Jardin du Luxembourg. Det blev bygget mellem 1779 og 1782 for at huse det franske statsteater, Comédie Française. Arkitekterne var de neoklassiske Marie-Joseph Peyre og Charles De Wailly.
Marie Antoinette åbnede teateret den 9. april 1782.
