Fæstningen ved Fougères fandt sted under hundredeårskrigen. Byen, der blev overrasket af englænderne, blev derefter belejret af hertugens tropper af Bretagne i 1449. Dette slag afsluttede våbenhvilen mellem Frankrig og England, som havde varet i fire år.

Endelig, efter tre års forgæves forhandlinger, beslutter kong Henri at forsøge et magtgreb ved at tage en bretagnesisk fæstning for at kræve hertugens frigivelse af Gilles i bytte for tilbageleveringen af denne fæstning.
