Gennem Porte du Bas kommer man ind i centrum af Mutzig, som ligger ca. 30 km fra Strasbourg langs den alsaciske vinrute.
Underporten blev forhøjet i 1559 og er en af de mest bemærkelsesværdige rester af den middelalderlige bybefæstning. En Saint-Maurice malet i 1895, byens våben, pryder østfacaden. Indtil 1775 var der en forborg (barbakane) foran porten, som blev erstattet af en monumental bue, der blev revet ned i 1894.

Mutzig er i middelalderen en by, hvor der udøves retfærdighed. Hexeprocesser og børnemord finder sted, og som man forresten kan finde i byens arkiver.
