Stationen blev åbnet af Cardiff Railway. Sammenlignet med de andre på linjen var Tongwynlais en af de større stationer. Den havde to lange perroner med en betydelig træbygning på den opadgående side. Perronerne var forbundet med en metalgangbro. 'Ned' perronen lukkede den 16. maj 1928, da sporene blev ensrettede. Stationen lukkede for både varer og passagerer i 1931. I 1947 genåbnedes linjen, men stationen gjorde ikke.
