Landmændene har omformet skråningerne i terrasser i århundreder på Sifnos. Kun i de seneste årtier er vedligeholdelsen af disse terrasser faldet, på grund af en anden, mere frugtbar afgrøde at høste på øen: turisme. Mit grove skøn er, at der er mere end 500 km terrassevægge på øen. Disse terrasser indeholder mere end 250.000 m³ (kubikmeter) sten, som er blevet omplaceret af landmændene på Sifnos for at skabe dette landskab. Dette kan sammenlignes med volumen af en lille egyptisk pyramide.
