Ordet taibhdhearc vises som et gloss for det latinske teatrum i et gammelt irsk dokument, afledt fra rødder, der betyder "drøm" og "blik." Det moderne irske ord for et teater er amharclann.
An Taibhdhearc er beliggende på 19 Middle Street, inden for den middelalderlige by Galway. Det er bygget på ruinerne af byens oprindelige augustinske kloster. Den bageste væg inkorporerer en væg fra dette kloster, herunder nogle udsmykkede vinduesrammer i sten.
