I 1986 blev der afholdt en konkurrence om en udendørs skulptur i anledning af byens 200-års jubilæum for Reykjavík. Jón Gunnars "Sun Voyager" vandt konkurrencen, og den aluminium model (42,5 x 88 x 36 cm) blev præsenteret for byen til udførelse. Den fuld størrelse Sun Voyager blev endelig afsløret på Sæbraut på byens fødselsdag, den 18. august 1990.
Værket er lavet af rustfrit stål og står på en cirkel af granitplader, omgivet af såkaldt "rådhusbeton". Det er bygget i overensstemmelse med Jón Gunnars større fuldskala tegning af Sun Voyager og blev ledsaget af Jón Gunnars assistent, kunstneren Kristinn E. Hrafnsson. Teknikken af skulpturen blev vejledt af teknikeren, Sigurjón Yngvason, i tæt samarbejde med Jón Gunnar selv.
