Pompei er en italiensk kommune med 23.990 indbyggere i storbyen Napoli i Campania, hjemsted for de berømte arkæologiske udgravninger af den gamle romerske by.
En migration af indbyggere fra Egeerhavets lande, efterkommere af pelasgerne, dannede en primitiv bosættelse ved foden af Vesuv, i området omkring Pompei: måske ikke en rigtig landsby, men sandsynligvis en lille samling af huse placeret ved krydset af tre vigtige veje, der i historisk tid blev fulgt af vejen fra Cuma, Nola, Stabia og Nocera.
