Det er en genopbygning af et tidligere pantheon på dette sted, som blev ødelagt af brand i år 80 e.Kr. Pantheon betyder 'alle guder'. Pantheon er en af de bedst bevarede romerske bygninger i verden. Dette skyldes, at bygningen i det 7. århundrede blev omdannet til kirke og er blevet brugt og vedligeholdt kontinuerligt. Pantheon bruges stadig som romersk-katolsk kirke og er viet til Hellige Maria og martyrerne. Det har den kirkelige æresbevisning basilika minor.
