I Norcia, det dengang hed Nursia, blev den hellige Benedikt født omkring år 480. I benediktinerklostret bliver der brygget øl.
Den 14. januar 1703 blev Norcia ramt af et jordskælv med en styrke på 6,7 på Richterskalaen. Også byerne Spoleto og Rieti blev ødelagt. Dødstallet blev anslået til mellem godt seks og næsten ti tusinde.
