Johan de Witt, herre af Zuid- og Nord-Linschoten, Snelrewaard, Hekendorp og IJsselvere, var i den Gyldne Æra i den Første Stadholderløse Periode i nitten år fra 1653 til 1672 råd pensionær for Holland og dermed den vigtigste politiker i den Hollandske Republik. Han var også en begavet matematiker, der betragtes som en af grundlæggerne af forsikringsmatematik. Selvom nutidens Holland kender ham som Johan, blev han kaldt Jan af sin kone og mange samtidige.
Johan blev myrdet sammen med sin bror Cornelis af orangister og bliver forfærdeligt lemlæstet. Mordet betragtes som en af de mest mindeværdige begivenheder i hollandsk historie.
