Det ligger syd for Makkum, sydvest for Idsegahuizum og nord for Gaast. Byens kerne ligger ved diget ved IJsselmeer. Mellem diget og landsbyen ligger Dijkvaart. I 2021 havde landsbyen 50 indbyggere. Under landsbyen hører også bebyggelsen Kooihuizen. Motsatte den sidste ligger naturreservatet Kooiwaard, og overfor Piaam selv ligger Zuidwaard i IJsselmeer, det tidligere Zuiderzee.
