I 1913 blev Bernardinuscollege grundlagt i Heerlen, en skole for drenge. Snart opstod spørgsmålet om højere sekundær uddannelse for piger. I 1920 grundlagde søstrene Fransicanesser i Heerlen en gymnasium for piger. Navnet blev dengang: RK HBS og Handelsskole for piger, bedre kendt som St. Clara-college og lå på Klompstraat. Den første rektor, fra 1920-1941, var søster Xavier Nolens. Coriovallum College fik i 1969 dette navn, da St Clara-college blev en blandet skole. I 1990 fusionerede Coriovallum College med Sintermeertencollege og fortsatte under navnet Sintermeertencollege.
