I Nyköping gjorde dronning Christina et kort ophold på slottet, hvor dronningemoder Maria Eleanora boede, for at sige farvel til sin mor. Det var sidste gang de to kvinder mødtes: Maria Eleonora skulle dø inden for et år. Forholdet mellem dem var anstrengt, ikke mindst på grund af de mørke år, mor og barn boede sammen i Nyköping efter døden af dronning Christinas far, kong Gustaf Adolf. Slottet skulle brænde ned sammen med byen i 1665. Senere blev dele af bygningen genopført. Fra det oprindelige slot er portbygningen (mellem slottet og kirken lige foran) den bedst bevarede. I dag bruges bygningen som et historisk museum. (Stik fremstillet i det 17. århundrede, fragment.)
