Oetz liegt in einer Weitung auf der ersten Stufe des Ötztales. Der Ort, ein Haufendorf, hat durch seine Beckenlage am Fuß des 3007 m hohen Acherkogels ein besonders mildes Klima, weshalb er wie die Bezirksstadt Imst mitunter „Meran Nordtirols“ genannt wird. Westlich des Hauptortes fließt die Ötztaler Ache.
