Die Diözese St. Pölten ist seit 1784/85 eine österreichische römisch-katholische Diözese mit Sitz in St. Pölten. Sie gehört zur Kirchenprovinz Wien und umfasst das westliche Niederösterreich, also Wald- und Mostviertel.
Kaiser Joseph II. zwang die Diözese Passau mit einem Vertrag vom 4. August 1784 zum Verzicht auf ihre Pfarren in Niederösterreich und gründete die Diözese St. Pölten. Mit einer Bulle vom 28. Januar 1785 stimmte Papst Pius VI. zu. Als Bischofssitz dienen seit 1785 die Gebäude des kurz zuvor aufgehobenen Augustinerchorherren-Stifts Sankt Pölten. Erster Bischof war bis 1792 Johann Heinrich von Kerens.
