Am 18. August 1914 musste König Albert seine Armee gezwungenermaßen nach Antwerpen zurückziehen. Er wollte den Deutschen jedoch nicht einfach freien Durchgang gewähren und griff sie von Antwerpen aus bis zweimal in die Flanke an. Jedes Mal lag Boortmeerbeek in der Schusslinie.
