Als Napoleon 1815 aus Elba entkam und seinen Marsch über Grenoble nach Paris begann, floh König Leopold XVIII. nach Gent. Er blieb hier etwas weniger als ein Jahr. Nachdem Napoleon im Juni 1815 in Waterloo besiegt worden war, kehrte König Leopold nach Paris zurück. Aus Dank an Gent schenkte er die Mitteltafeln des Lam Gods zurück an Gent. Diese waren während der Französischen Revolution entwendet und ins Louvre gebracht worden.
