Merksem ist ein Stadtteil der belgischen Stadt Antwerpen. Bis zum 1. Januar 1983 war Merksem eine eigenständige Gemeinde. Der Toponym Merksem besteht aus zwei Teilen, nämlich "merk" und "heem". Es wird vermutet, dass der Name auf eine fränkische Grenzsiedlung verweist, die zum Bistum Kamerijk gehörte. Die gegenüberliegende Siedlung wäre dann Ekeren gewesen, die zum Bistum Lüttich gehörte.
