Dieser Weißdorn (Crataegus monogyna) gehört zu den Rosengewächsen, genau wie Äpfel und Birnen. Es ist ein dornenreicher Strauch oder kleiner Baum, der sehr alt werden kann. Die Früchte sind kugel- oder eiförmig, etwa einen Zentimeter lang, tiefrot und reif im September. Die Beeren bieten den Vögeln im Winter Nahrung.
Vor der Erfindung des Stacheldrahts wurde der Weißdorn, oft zusammen mit anderen Dornensträuchern, als Hecke verwendet, um das Vieh auf der Weide zu halten. Solche Hecken wurden oft gelegt oder geflochten, um das Vieh noch besser drinnen zu halten.
