Am Montag, den 24. August, kommt der junge Georges Hancotte, gegen Ende des Nachmittages, zu Fuß von Franière nach Floreffe.
Kurz vor dem Wald von Nangot stehen zwei Wohnblocks, die durch eine schmale Gasse getrennt sind. Georges sieht dort einige französische Soldaten sitzen und vielleicht spricht er sie an? Wir wissen es nicht...
Hier angekommen, am Fuß der Abtei, hält er an, um eine deutsche Patrouille von Reitern vorbeizulassen. Diese haben wahrscheinlich die Franzosen bemerkt und ein deutscher Unteroffizier fragt Georges, ob er französische Soldaten gesehen hat... Er antwortet mit Nein...
Für diese Lüge zieht der Deutsche seine Pistole und erschießt Georges kaltblütig. Es ist 17 Uhr nachmittags.
