Seit 1895 ist der Mariapark mit der Lourdesgrotte in Belgien und den Niederlanden ein bekanntes Wallfahrtsort.
Die Erscheinung von Maria in Lourdes löste auch in Meersel-Dreef eine ungeahnte Marienverehrung aus.
Die Kapuziner spielten hier gerne darauf an, und die 'Unsere Liebe Frau von Lourdes in Meersel-Dreef' wurde der Mittelpunkt der Verehrung an der Grenze.
Der Wald gegenüber dem Kloster, der zunächst als Klostergarten diente, erhielt eine neue Bestimmung als Andachtspark.
Pater Jan Baptist Rutten hatte versprochen, eine Lourdesgrotte zu errichten, falls er wohlbehalten von einer Mission in Punjab (Pakistan) zurückkehren würde. Und so geschah es.
Der Mariapark ist von Sonnenaufgang bis Sonnenuntergang zugänglich.
Hier wurde eine Geräuschmessung durchgeführt.
