Description

1909 wurde an dieser Stelle eine Statue des Humanisten, Latinisten und Historikers Justus Lipsius (Overijse 1547 - Leuven 1606), seit 1592 Professor an der Universität Leuven, errichtet, um einen seit 1890 hier aufgestellten gusseisernen Brunnen zu ersetzen. Es besteht aus einem hohen Blausteinsockel im neoklassizistischen Stil, signiert "J. JOURDAIN - SCULPTEUR" und "H. VAES. V. CRETEN - ARCHITECTES" und einer von Felix Van Aerschodt gegossenen Bronzeskulptur (siehe Inschrift). Das Denkmal wurde der Stadt anlässlich des 75. Jahrestages der Wiedererrichtung (1834-1909) der Katholischen Universität Leuven vom belgischen Staat gestiftet, siehe die Inschrift „JUSTO.LIPSIO/ IN.ALMA.UNIVERSITATE/ LOVANIENSI. PROFESSORI/ ADMCMIX .RESTITUAE/ UNIVERSITATIS.LXXV/ LEOPOLDO.II/ REGE. BELGARUM".
