Der Platz ist seit 1883 nach dem flämischen Schriftsteller Hendrik Conscience aus dem 19. Jahrhundert benannt, von dem eine Statue auf dem Platz aufgestellt ist. Zuvor sprach man vom Jesuitenplatz.
Die teilweise aus dem 17. Jahrhundert stammenden Gebäude rund um den Platz sind durch einen barocken Stil gekennzeichnet. Dies gilt insbesondere für die beeindruckende Sint-Carolus Borromeus-Kirche, eine ehemalige Jesuitenkirche. Der barocke Stil der Bebauung rund um den Platz, mit viel Pracht und Herrlichkeit, wurde bewusst von den Jesuiten gefördert: Als Teil der Gegenreformation wollte der Orden die Bevölkerung auf verschiedene Weise anregen, die Kirchen zu besuchen.
