Der Ursprung des Namens ist unklar. Vermutlich enthält er einen vorrömischen Stamm, der sich später mit dem lateinischen Suffix -aria verband, das im Surselvisch -era ergab. Faleras Wahrzeichen ist die Kirche St. Remigius aus dem 15. Jahrhundert.
Das Wappen zeigt die alte Pfarrkirche, eine der ältesten des Bündner Oberlandes. Das in einem Gemeindesiegel verwendete Bild des Kirchenpatrons wurde nicht verwendet.
