Der obere und grössere Teil des Tals bildet die Gemeinde Bregaglia und liegt im Schweizer Kanton Graubünden, der untere Teil besteht aus den Gemeinden Piuro und Chiavenna und gehört zur italienischen Provinz Sondrio.
Teilweise wird auch nur der schweizerische Teil des Tals als Bergell bezeichnet und der italienische Teil zum Val Chiavenna gezählt.
