Kues ist bekannt als Geburtsort des Gelehrten Nikolaus von Kues aus dem 15. Jahrhundert. Nikolaus von Kues war ein deutscher Theologe, Philosoph, Mathematiker, Astronom, Humanist und Jurist. Er wurde als der einzige brillante Denker des 15. Jahrhunderts bezeichnet. Er beschrieb zunächst die Verwendung von konkaven Linsen zur Korrektur von Kurzsichtigkeit. Und im Bereich der Politik entwickelte er sein eigenes System der gewichteten Wahlen. Sein Bild ist noch heute auf einem Gemälde in Kues' Krankenhaus zu sehen. Gemalt wurde es von Meister des Marienlebens.
