Borna ist eine Große Kreisstadt in Sachsen, etwa 30 km südlich von Leipzig. Die Stadt ist der Verwaltungssitz des Landkreises Leipzig.
Borna liegt im südlichen Teil der Leipziger Tieflandsbucht, im Naturraum Bergbaurevier Südraum Leipzig. Durch die Stadt fließt der kleine Fluss Wyhra, der sich zuvor durch das Landschaftsschutzgebiet Wyhraaue schlängelt. In der heutigen Umgebung von Borna entstanden im Tertiär umfangreiche Braunkohlevorkommen, deren Förderung im Tagebau in den vergangenen 100 Jahren das Landschaftsbild wesentlich geprägt hat. So sind Berge aus den Abraumhalden der Tagebauaufschlüsse entstanden, und aus den Tagebaurestlöchern wurde durch Flutung das Leipziger Neuseenland.
