Der Landkreis Roth liegt im Südosten des bayerischen Regierungsbezirks Mittelfranken. Der Landkreis ist Mitglied der Metropolregion Nürnberg.
Der Landkreis Roth liegt in der „geographischen Mitte“ Bayerns, im Fränkischen Seenland und im Naturpark Altmühltal. Das südliche Kreisgebiet nimmt die Fränkische Alb mit Höhen bis zu 612 m ein. Der Norden gehört zum Albvorland und zum Mittelfränkischen Becken. Das größte natürliche Gewässer ist die Rednitz, die auf dem Gebiet der Gemeinde Georgensgmünd aus dem Zusammenfluss ihrer Quellflüsse Fränkische Rezat und Schwäbische Rezat entsteht, dann Richtung Osten, später nach Norden fließt und vor Schwabach das Kreisgebiet wieder verlässt.
