Pirna ist eine Große Kreisstadt und der Verwaltungssitz des Landkreises Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge und der Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Pirna im Freistaat Sachsen.
Pirna liegt am oberen Beginn der Elbtalweitung, wo die Wesenitz von Norden und die Gottleuba von Süden in die Elbe münden. Es liegt an der schollentektonischen Nahtstelle von Erzgebirge und Westsudeten, die sich nach Westen zum Grabenbruch des Elbtalkessels weitet.
