Die Stadt liegt im oberen Sulzbachtal im Gebiet des Saarkohlenwaldes, etwa zehn Kilometer nordöstlich von Saarbrücken und etwa vier Kilometer nordwestlich von St. Ingbert.
Zu Sulzbach/Saar gehören die Stadtteile Altenwald, Brefeld, Hühnerfeld, Neuweiler, Schnappach sowie Sulzbach Mitte, der ursprüngliche Ortskern.
