Wertheim ist die nördlichste Stadt Baden-Württembergs, direkt an der Grenze zu Bayern, etwa 70 Kilometer südöstlich von Frankfurt am Main und 30 Kilometer westlich von Würzburg. Die Mittelstadt liegt in Tauberfranken und ist die zweitgrößte Stadt des Main-Tauber-Kreises und ein Mittelzentrum in der Region Heilbronn-Franken für die umliegenden Gemeinden. Seit dem 1. Januar 1976 ist Wertheim eine Große Kreisstadt.
