Die Stadt Rendsburg liegt in der Mitte Schleswig-Holsteins am Nord-Ostsee-Kanal und am historischen Ochsenweg. Sie verbindet die beiden Landesteile Schleswig und Holstein, wobei die Altstadt historisch auf einem Werder des Grenzflusses Eider liegt. Die Mittelstadt ist stark durch ihre historische Funktion als südliche Grenzfeste des dänischen Reiches und als Garnisonstadt/Militärstandort geprägt. Heute ist sie Sitz der Kreisverwaltung des Kreises Rendsburg-Eckernförde.
