Kamen ist eine nordrhein-westfälische Hansestadt des östlichen Ruhrgebietes und gehört zum Kreis Unna. Bis zum Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts waren sowohl die Schreibweisen „Camen“ als auch „Kamen“ üblich. 1903 wurde die heutige Form des Ortsnamens amtlich festgelegt.
Kamen liegt am Südrand der Westfälischen Bucht und unmittelbar nördlich des ersten Höhenrückens der mitteldeutschen Hügelzone, des Haarstrangs, und nahe der Hellweg-Zone, die durch die Kreisstadt und südliche Nachbarstadt Unna zentriert ist.
