Linnich ist die nördlichste und drittgrößte Stadt im Kreis Düren in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Sie liegt genau in der Mitte zwischen den Städten Mönchengladbach im Nordosten und Aachen im Südwesten an der Rur.
Linnich und sein Umland sind im Norden der Jülicher Börde gelegen, am Übergang von der Kölner Bucht zum niederrheinischen Tiefland. Der Stadtkern von Linnich liegt im Rurtal links der Rur. Die zugehörigen Ortsteile gruppieren sich herum, wobei Körrenzig und Tetz ebenfalls im Rurtal liegen. Auch wenn Linnich nicht direkt im Rheinischen Braunkohlerevier liegt, so findet man im Stadtgebiet zahlreiche Auswirkungen der nahen Tagebaue.
